Forgiveness from Love

Last August, I attended the “Grand New Day” conference put on by Women of Faith. Steve Arterburn’s sister, Marilyn, spoke about pre-marital counseling. She told an interesting story, which I hope I recall the details of to share with you.

Lester and Lucy were a couple who had recently married and as they were getting all moved in to their new home, Lester commented about all the boxes they each possessed. Lucy asked Lester what was inside of all his boxes and he answered that it was just “stuff.” She said, “Let’s play a game. Let’s open a box and take one piece of “stuff” out of the box and talk about that one piece.”  So, Lester agreed and proceeded to open a box taking out a piece of “stuff.”The first piece of stuff was a gift he had received from his mother years ago. He told Lucy all about the conflict in his relationship with his mother, and how at a young age he left home, lied about his age and enrolled in the army.  When he was at strongest odds with his mom and away on duty, he met and married a girl from whom he was now divorced.  “Oh . . .” Lucy said slowly and surprised. Then Lester wanted Lucy to share a piece of “stuff.” In agreement, she pulled out her piece of “stuff,” which was a photograph of herself and two of her high school friends. She began to tell Lester about the girls.  “When I was a girl I got pregnant and my two friends helped me get an abortion . . .”  Before she could finish her story, Lester was already backing away from her.  He could not believe what he was hearing, “An abortion?”

In the beginning of the story Lester and Lucy were doing pretty well freely giving grace to one another, but when things came out that were shocking to the other, Lester began to back away, just like he had done with his mother and previous wife.

This story can resonate in so many of our own lives. All we need to do is change the names. There are so many wounds that we carry in our own hearts causing us to respond to other people’s heartache from a condemning and judgmental attitude. Somehow we get it into our heads that we are better than the other person. This is a false truth that we are living in. I love the scripture that teaches us to “Take the LOG out of your own eye before you attempt to remove a SPECK from another persons eye.”  Those words alone should ring deep within each of our hearts. How many times have you said, “Look at her, thinking she looks so good” or “I can’t believe she is doing that, I would NEVER do that” and then you find yourself two weeks later, doing exactly what you said you would not do!

I am thankful we have a merciful God and He forgives us for the absolute rubbish that comes from our mouths. There was a time in my life where it did not matter what came out of my mouth. I freely spoke, criticized and made fun of people. Praise God that He has a way to tame that little muscle in our mouths training it, through the heart, to speak on things that are pure and lovely and encouraging, trustworthy, noble, uplifting and praiseworthy (see Philippians 4:8).

We read throughout the scriptures, that when Jesus Christ endured the cross and died a sinners death, we were forgiven of our wrongs and trespasses against God. What is it that prevents many from believing God? We are forgiven! It is left in our hands to accept His forgiveness. God will never force that upon us. In the same way that we are forgiven, we are to forgive others. In fact, the scriptures tell us in very specific words, when you forgive another of his wrongs, he is forgiven in the sight of God!

“If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely.  The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.  Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.  I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.” 2 Corinthians 2:5-7 (NIV)

God’s Amazing Love

He is risen from the dead!
He is risen from the dead!

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this; while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NIV)

God has loved us since before we were born, when we were knit together in our mother’s womb. All our lives He patiently waits for us to turn to Him and love Him back so He can strengthen us through His abundant love and undeserving mercy.

We go through many experiences that seem to be the end of life itself; but somehow we pick up the pieces and keep moving. It could be any number or combination of circumstances we experience on our journey. Perhaps you can relate to some of these:

We lose a job due to cutbacks; We lose a home in foreclosure; We have a wayward child; Our spouse is unfaithful; We have a prolonged illness; We lose a spouse suddenly by death

All of these events are difficult and hard to manage on our own and sometimes we wonder, “How could a loving God let something like this happen to me?”

God does allow all things to happen. He is in control of all time, matter, and events, which are either tragic or victorious. When something happens in our lives or of those we love, we are being taught to rejoice in these times. Why and how can we do this?

We do this is because as His children, it brings glory to Him. It isn’t that God is a torturous God, it’s that He loves us and wants to teach us how to deal with hardship and trials so we will know Him deeper and utterly depend upon Him for our breath.

One of the first ways we can start to do this is to accept that God loves us no matter what we thoughts we have had, what words we have uttered or what actions we have made against Him in our lifetime.  No matter what losses, no matter what victories, God loves us. He loves us enough not to leave us where we are, so He sent His Son to give His life for ours.

Secondly, Jesus Christ died on the cross as a criminal for the forgiveness of our all our rebellious ways. He too, was mistreated and lived a life of persecution and scoffing.  His death frees us from the burden of our sin for the past, present and future. He won the victory over sin through His death. Once we genuinely profess that Christ is our Savior, ask for His forgiveness with a heart of repentance and invite Him into our lives to be the One in control, a mighty work begins in us.  It may take one day to begin change in our lives, or it may take more than forty years. Usually it is the latter.  I have known many people who were misled when they were younger about the truth of God, thereby resulting in years of poor choices, turmoil, loss and emptiness. But in the climax of the moment of hopelessness chose to trust God and depend on Him alone. In fact, I was one of those people.

A final point, but the most important, is that Jesus Christ died for us while we were still out of control, being controlled by our sinful nature. He was raised from the dead and before ascending to heaven to sit at the throne of God, He sent the Holy Spirit, as the gift of eternal life, to live in us as our guide. The effect in our lives is not what we have done, but what Christ did for us.  God is in charge of all time, He can go in and out of time wherever He chooses; He is Sovereign. When He dies for us, while we are still sinners, we die with Him and are born again into a new life of freedom. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is the One that raises us out of our lives of emptiness and doom to a new life in Christ. He begins a work in us manifesting His character and His love. When we receive this from God, allowing Him to do a work in us, we receive peace, hope and joy as we have never known before and beyond any man’s description.

The heartaches and tragedies, the pain and writhing, the despair and emptiness are allowed by a God who loves us so much so that we will turn to Him! It sounds funny doesn’t it, but it’s true! In loving Him, He will build up strength in us that a world full of armies cannot overcome.

God is a loving God, but He is also a wrathful God who will have justice and reveal all truth about everything in our lives. There is a day that comes for each of us, and we will either choose to live in the refuge of our mighty God, bringing glory and honor and praise to His name through our lives, or we will choose to keep on living in our own strength and our own way, resulting in emptiness, loss, tragedy, hopelessness and constant worry.  There is a path that a man thinks is right, but in the end it is death.

God loves us! He wants to bring us into His love so we can live with Him, bringing praise and glory to His name for eternity. His allowance of events and His wrath in our individual lives and world is a way of protecting us now and for eternity because He loves us so deeply.

I often wonder why it took me so long, but today none of that matters, I am forgiven. I am new and have been made clean. God promises this for those who believe Him.

What can we do to improve our lives in Christ?  Do we know Him and His love? Are we free to live in Him?

Happy Anniversary

I have learned so much over these past three years of my new life! I have learned my true value and worth. I have learned that it does not come from men or people at all. Other people come from the same skewed perceptions we come from based on all of their life experiences. I now find my value and worth from a loving, merciful and unending grace-giving God. He loves me as I am, just as I am, yet He loves me enough not to leave me where I am.

Six days ago was the “celebration” of 3 years of being brought home. I returned a broken, lost, desperate and empty person who had no confidence, no self value and no hope who looked to my then-husband and material things to fill the deep chasm which lay inside me. I would ask myself, “What is wrong with me?” Here I was, wealthy beyond any dream, living on the South Sea and I was empty! I had everything one could imagine, yet I had no sense of who I was, and I had no meaningful purpose. Since that day 3 years ago, I have found complete peace. I have had the provision met which was needed in my life and it’s so much more than the eye can see! I have greater joy and purpose – a fulfillment beyond explanation and I’m just thrilled about where I am in the journey of my life, right now, this minute.

God has shown me how special I am to Him and how deeply He loves me. He has brought me out of the depths of the darkness and now His light shines in all the crevices. It has not been a road of easy decisions and although I continue to deal with some of the same circumstances and consequences in my life, I have a new perspective. My days are full of prayer with an attitude of gratitude and recognition of God’s Mighty power in the tiniest of details of my life to the greatest of circumstances in this world.

The very first step in my healing was recognizing our God and His Sovereignty.  He is much greater than me and knows infinitely better the heart I have and direction for my life than I know it myself. The opening up of my heart and saying “Okay God, I’m yours, I cannot do this anymore, I just don’t know how, I surrender! I’m sorry for thinking I could do this all without you! I ask for your forgiveness of my sin and the way that I put others first in my life when it should have been you! I am deeply sorry Lord! Please come into my heart and lead me in all I think, say and do.”

This step was the beginning of my journey of intimacy with God. I can’t wait to share with you through future writings the impact of this one step in my life!
